More than Money

Letter to our Friends

August/September 2003

Dear Friends,

September 20th is the Big Day

On September 20th Diane and I will be married.  It seems like yesterday – not a year ago – that we set this special date and began our plans.  Since our clients, friends, and family read our newsletter; many of you have been part of or followed our progress over these past twelve months.  So many of you reached out with thoughts and prayers that it would be impossible to list each one.  You know who you are and, we hope, you know how much we appreciate your kindness and love.

I understand that our More than Money effort is not the typical, bottom-line, financial missive filled with charts and bar graphs.  If you’ve been part of our MtM family for any time at all you know that we place people first and dollars somewhere down the list.  Having met so many of you in person, by phone, on the air, through email, I know that you feel the same way.  I know that you’ll forgive me for taking space in this letter for such a personal message.

Diane and I are blessed to have three beautiful daughters.  In many ways our marriage will also be a “merger”.  As our big day approaches, please keep our daughters Alexandra, Alyssa, and Megan in mind as well.  They each have a special role to play both in our wedding ceremony and our lives.  With our daughters with us, our happiness is complete.

Diane and I are very aware of how blessed we are to have you folks as part of our lives.

Thank you.

After the Wedding

Just when you think you can take a breather……  I found an article in one of my journals about the details to be addressed once the wedding is over.  It included a list of the changes necessary to insure that your “legalities” are in place when you are married.  Here is the – incomplete, I’m sure – list:

Driver’s License                       Health Insurance                       Life Insurance

Passport                                   Military Records                       Wills and Trusts

Vehicle Titles                            Real Estate Deeds                    Social Security

Can you think of any we’ve missed?  Send them over by email or mail and we’ll include them in the next letter.

Keystone Savings Bank

Many of you, who were depositors as of the cut-off date, have received packages from Keystone giving you the opportunity to buy stock in that bank.  The question is whether you should take advantage of this opportunity.  The answer is – that depends.

The answer depends on your financial situation and goals.  The fact that Keystone is an excellent institution with sound future prospects does not mean that everyone offered stock should invest.  For some, this will be an investment that fits well – for others, not.  Please review your situation prior to making this decision to insure this investment is a good fit.

Many people become frustrated when they receive average results for their hard work.  However, hard work exerted with the incorrect focus is wasted effort producing disappointing results.  It is critical that we use our powers of analysis and tools of technology to aid us in identifying the key factors in our efforts that will produce the most impact on our success.  Our quote this month comes from a man well know in the business consulting arena whose ideas have important implications for every human endeavor, Bill Bonner:

“The secret to success, in life and in business, is to work hard at the margin.  Relentlessly.  It is as powerful as compound interest – often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world.  Those little marginal extra efforts will inevitably grow into something big.”

Keep watching, listening, and learning,

Gene
